Do You Remember Your First Day of School?
The excitement you felt showing off your new clothes, cool sneakers, and backpack? Well, that’s not what it’s like for the 25,000 kids we serve each year. You see, they face embarrassment and ridicule just because their families cannot afford new clothes. Instead, parents must put food on the table and pay this month’s rent. Students show up at school wearing the one shirt they own, worn‐out shoes, and you can forget about a backpack. Celebrating 50 years, Back to School Clothing Drive helps break down barriers to early childhood school success by providing new school uniforms and outfits, backpacks and school supplies to K‐6 grade students who desperately need them. We do so through three signature programs
New Clothes, New Beginnings Annual Distribution
Our annual clothing distribution takes place over the course of four days each July. More than 3,000 volunteers are on hand to help 5,000 kindergarten through 6th‐grade students from 140 Title I schools in more than 30 districts participate in this event. Another 5,000 students in Northern Arizona receive backpacks filled with school supplies. A total of 10,000 students benefit from this program annually.
Student Attire for Education (SAFE) Matching Grant & Online Retail Store
The SAFE program helps schools stock their onsite clothing closets. Funding is generously donated by the Gila River Indian Nation, BHHS Legacy Foundation and others. These items are made available throughout the year through member schools to children whose parents are unable to buy supplies or who need them. Currently 260 schools and more than 15,000 children benefit from this program annually.
Stitches of Love
The only thing more fun than receiving something new is receiving something hand made by someone who cares about you. Our dedicated and talented corps of 600 volunteer seamstresses, often times referred to as “Stitches of Love Angels,” sew all year round to support our program. Many of these volunteers sew over 300 items each year. Combined they make over 30,000 items making them the most prolific volunteers anywhere in the Valley.
More About Back to School Clothing Drive
Back to School Clothing Drive programs focus on families living at or below the poverty level that daily choose between paying rent, buying food for the family or clothing for their kids. BTSCD does so by providing basic need items like school clothing and supplies, but it’s value is in the delivery of self esteem and self confidence to help them off to a successful start to school and throughout the school year. BTSCD delivers more than $3.5 million dollars in school clothing through its three signature programs: New Clothes, New Beginning Summer Distribution Event; Student Attire For Education Matching Grant and Online Retail Store; and Stitches of Love.
